The muscular system is a curving three-dimensional grid of about 700 named muscles, which establish a tensile attachment to the bones of the skeletal system. The muscle system elastically adapts the tension of the muscles to support and maintain balance and movement of the skeletal structure as it moves through space. Each muscle is a discrete organ constructed of skeletal muscle tissue, blood vessels, tendons and nerves. Muscle tissue is also found inside the heart, digestive organs, and blood vessels. The muscle tissue in these organs, moves substances throughout the body.

There are three types of muscle tissue in the human body: Visceral, cardiac and skeletal.
